In the Mental Health Year Article there was a story about the Golden Gate bridge which is located in San Francisco, California. In the article it stated that numerous people, 38 last year to be exact, jumped off the bridge and killed themselves. This has caused the bridge to be named one of the most famous suicide landmarks in America.
To prevent more suicides San Francisco has finally passed an idea to put a net on the bridge. With this net it will catch anyone who tries to kill themselves. Though the idea has been passed, they still need to fund the bridge's customization which will take possibly another year and more people to die.
The smart people of California should have thought of this problem, and even if they did think of it, they should've taken measures to make sure no one tries again. With suicide rates rising, many people should take into account how much it affects other people. Though im saddened that many peoples lives were taken, atleast they have finally thought of ideas to prevent this.

That's an interesting idea.I don't know if it really will cut down on that many suicides. Generally, when people have their mind set on dying, the go and die. A decrease in suicides off of the bridge might lead to and increase of suicides via some other method.
Oh wow, suicide sucks.
I kinda agree with Victoria. Suicide can happen anywhere, and by eliminating the Golden Gate Bridge as a suicide place, that's only one out of a million ways to die. But still, interesting article :)
wow...i didn't know that. i heard cornell students have a high suicide rate by jumping off the waterfall there. it's sad how people are just so quick to their decision to end their lives.
Interesting..that's good though that they put a net up to prevent people from jumping off. I mean, even though they thought of it pretty late, at least they thought of the idea ya know?
Are they going to put it over the whole bridge? That'll take alot o work! But that's an interesting idea.
i don't think a net would help that much?!?
but i have to agree, it's better than nothing. it's sad how we have to wait another year for there to be a net =p they should realize that people's lives are at stake, and make this project of importance
overall, great post =)
wow. I didn't know the golden gate bridge was also a suicide setting. Nice article.
I agree with you. With the suicide rates going up, they should have made a plan sooner to help save some peoples lives. Because your right, it does affect other people and it is sad. But like you said, at least their adressing it now.
I really don't know if that action will decrease the amount of suicides. I agree with Victoria that it will just increase the amount of suicides in other forms.
This was interesting. I saw a documentary which was really depressing, but it shows the reality of life. One of the people who jumped off was a man who was bipolar. He survived, but his story was really sad. He was walking over there and ask people to take his picture. He wanted people to notice he was crying and ask him what was wrong. Nobody noticed. When he was about to jump off he regretted his decision and felt encouraged to live for himself and not others based on those people. Still, he fell off and only broke some bones. But he lived. I thought it was powerful. ♥
Well that's unfortunate...I've been to the Golden State Bridge, and it looks really beautiful from an angle. People jumping off would ruin the otherwise picturesque scene. So please, do not kill yourself. Would a net really help? They would have to rescue the people that landed in it...
wow it must take a lot of effort and time to put all those nets on the bridge. but i'm glad that they finally thought of an idea to prevent people from jumping off.
The net idea is kinda funny. People work up the courage to jump off the bridge, but when they hit the net its like "oh darn, i didn't die." Haha, but its great that they are aware of these suicides and putting the effort for nets. Great article! I enjoyed reading it. :)
I think this is a smart idea, but i severly doubt it will cut down on the amount of suicides.
I think once someone is set on dying, they're gonna do it no matter what. Even though the net thing is a pretty good idea. I feel it might have almost been impossible to know that while still in construction, it was going to be the place of so many deaths.
i dont believe that when building a bridge, people should take into account suicide rate. that's like saying people should take into account suicide when building skyscrapers. its interesting the number of sucicides that occur from jumping off the golden gate bridge, but im not sure how effective a net will be. suicide is inevitable, and trying to prevent it doesnt mean the person cannot kill themself another way, like victoria and others stated.
